Sex Makes Men Better Map Reader…Really!

OK, we all know that men are naturally better map readers than women. It may sound sexist to say it but sod it, it’s true. Men just seem have more of a natural ability when it comes to direction and other such things. The only real question is why?

Well there appears to be an answer to that question. Men are better at map reading because of…..SEX!!

Caveman Days

It all seems to date back to caveman days when our male ancestors’ desired to spread their seed further afield in an attempt to reduce in-breeding. This gave them an better inate sense of direction which still resonates through to today, according to the study at least.

Academics at the University of Utah devised the theory after studying the traditions of the Twe and Tjimba tribes in Namibia in southern Africa.

Well, it appears that the these guys will walk upwards of 120 miles to find potential sexual partners in other communities.

Men who did better in map-reading tests had not only travelled further, they also had children with more women, according to the study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour.

‘Navigation ability facilitates travelling longer distances… and the farther you travel, the more likely you are to encounter new mating opportunities,’ said researcher Layne Vashro.

Dr Vashro went on to state that people who travelled further in these tribes also had more children but that is ‘what you would expect if mating was the pay-off for travel,’ he added.

Makes Sense

I have to say, I’m not always convinced about studies that you see in the press. I always get the impression they are made by some smart arse Professor who conducts an experiment and fixes the evidence to get the result he wants. However, this one appears to make sense.

Most of man (and woman’s) evolution has come from the desire to procreate the species or to eat. Look at it this way, going back to caveman days, the only two things we were interested in doing was eating and having sex. We invented weapons because we wanted to make killing animals or people easier (something we still do) and we wanted to spread our seed.

It makes sense that when our early ancestors noticed that having sex with his sister created a child with two heads, he felt he needed to go further from home to get his end away. Without GPS or an I-Phone he would have needed to look at maps, so therefore that will be ingrained in our DNA to this day.

The Next Study?

The next study I want to see is the answer to the question as to why women can multi-task whilst men can only do one thing at a time? I suspect it is because men, back in pre-historic times had only two things to concentrate on; killing and sex. It makes sense that even back in those days, women actually had to do everything else.

So what do you think? Are men better map readers than women? Is this study correct? Let us know in the comments section below or over at the Escort Norway forum.
