It shouldn’t be surprising that people in China are paying for the chance to be reborn in a giant uterus after experiencing what cremation feels like, but it is. After all, why the hell would anyone PAY to be burnt alive and then pushed out of a uterus?
Even after researching it, I’m still not sold on the idea. Sure, people might be curious to see what it is actually like, but to actually travel to a theme park to experience it? Yeah, you won’t be catching me there any time soon!
Most shockingly is how popular this ride has proven to the public, with thousands flocking in the time since its opening to experience death and life again from a giant uterus. So what is this bizarre thing all about, and why is it proving so popular?
A theme park with a difference
Basically, this whole thing is about a death simulator. People are paying to go through this “ride” to see what it is like to die. Yes, really. The theme park that this unique “ride” is a part of is the Window on the World in Shenzhen, and is one of the only Samadhi 4D Experience of Death simulators in the world.
Originally, the idea was created by Huang Weiping and Ding Rui, the founders of Hand in Hand, a cancer hospice service. They wanted to give users of this ride the chance to see what dying is actually like, and so started a fundraising campaign on Jue.so.
Amazingly, the crowd-funding website allowed them to raise £43,000 (roughly 490,000 NOK or $65,000) to make their dream a reality, and so these two budding entrepreneurs set to work on researching and creating their own death ride.
The ride officially opened in September of 2014, allowing visitors to simulate their own deaths before they are put into an incinerator and born again. Honestly, are we even surprised anymore by the things people think about?
Researching the idea
Obvious to create such a unique ride experience for a theme park, the creators had to do a lot of research. Not only did Ding and Huang say that they researched the process in detail, but they actually went through a furnace used for cremation, obviously without the fire.
In an interview, one of the creators described what it was like going through a furnace without the flames on. “I couldn’t breathe,” Huang said in an interview, “I thought my life was over.”
So why create something like this? Well, in Korea there is a similar service with the aims of tackling the country’s high suicide rate. They hope that, by showing people what dying would really be like, they won’t want to take their own lives. It seems like pretty noble stuff.
However, Huang and Ding seem to have a different aim with their game, as China’s suicide rate is currently one of the lowest in the world. Their work in hospices has told them people don’t really understand death, which can make the process of a death in the family hard to tackle: “we lack understanding of death, and the fear can become so overwhelming”.
The great escape
Honestly, the entire ride seems to be very doom and gloom, as people are paying about £26 a time (nearly 300 NOK or $40) to experience this “death simulator”. That’s a lot of many for a theme park ride… so what exactly does the ride entail?
To start off, the game seems to be very similar to other “escape games”, where you are faced with a series of challenges to complete in order to stay alive. However, no matter what you do you will eventually find your death in game and so you must take the next step of the journey.
“Dead” players are then placed in a coffin that goes along a conveyor belt into a furnace. While there are no actual flames there, heat lamps and lights help to simulate the 40 degrees Celsius temperatures in the “furnace” to make an “authentic experience of burning”, according to Huang and Ding.
From there, they then find themselves in a room where a womb is projected onto the ceiling. They can hear a heart breaking loudly, and then after a little while a bright light will appeal. This signals the way out, and when they crawl towards it, they will have been “reborn”.
Only in China
It’s not really that surprising that this ride can be found in China, especially given the unusual things we often hear about the country. It was, after all, only last week that we spoke about their sex potion advert that was promoting rape and abuse, so a death simulator shouldn’t be too shocking.
What I find most surprising is how popular it has proved. Sure, you might go along for the novelty, but many are going because they want to know what death will be like. Obviously, this ride isn’t showing what death or even rebirth is like, because they are using their own imagination to do it.
Personally, I don’t get it, and I’m surprised that people aren’t spending their money elsewhere. For example, China is one of the best countries producing realistic sex dolls, and you would think people want to spend their money on those instead of on death… but no, it seems death is where people are drawn to.
