May Is National Masturbation Month!

Looking for something fun to do in May? Look no further! May is not only National Masturbation Month, but it is also National Masturbation Day on the 7th… like we really needed an excuse!

So, what sort of things should you expect to see happening in the area on these amazing days, what should you be doing to keep yourself entertained, and just what started it all to begin with?

The beginning of Masturbation Month

You might think that Masturbation Month would be the kind of thing that Pornhub would come up with for some great cause, or perhaps a group of horny men wanting the perfect excuse for jerking one off at any point… and you’d be wrong.

Instead, Good Vibrations, a sex toy shop based in San Francisco, declared May was Masturbation Month back in 1995, and they want people to get involved in events to raise money for charities that focus on the positive sides of sex.

Part of me also suspects that they did it as a way to try and boost the sales of toys, but that might be the sceptic in me simply being unwilling to admit that a sex toy company would start a month like this purely to help others.

The day and consequently the month spouted as a result of a Surgeon General at the time, Joycelyn Elders, being fired by the President at the time Bill Clinton for having the gall to suggest that we should be teaching about masturbation as part of sex education.

While the month is primarily to get people involved in sex-positive charities and causes, the day has been set aside to try and protect our right to masturbate in response to Elders’ sacking. So it wasn’t just dreamed up by some horny guys on a lonely night.

Masturbation facts

Before we get into just what you should be doing during Masturbation Month, we should look at some of the facts about jacking off. A poll by We-Vibe asked 600 people, aged between 20 and 70, to give their honest answers to questions about masturbation. The results are pretty surprising.

For a start, between 65% and 85% of people said that they were perfectly happy talking about masturbation with their friends. This shows that masturbation is no longer the taboo subject we’ve always thought of it as.

The website then looked at when and where people will masturbate, with 19% of the women they surveyed admitted they have done it in their car. We hope that it wasn’t while driving, because that would be one hell of a thing to get pulled by the police for! It also seems that we feel friskier in the winter months, as 82% of those surveyed said they would tug one out in the colder months of the year, instead of the summer.

Toys also get a mention, with 50% saying that toys make up a part of their masturbation ritual. However, 50% of them went on to say that reaching orgasm is actually easier when they are on their own or using a toy, rather than with their partner. Maybe we should be paying more attention to what we’re doing in bed!

Masturbation isn’t always a solo activity. Okay, the whole point is that you do it to yourself, but 39% of those surveyed said that they have let a partner watch them masturbate before, which is a fantastic idea. You show your partner what you like and they get a great show in the process!

Masturbate in May!

There are so many reasons why you should be celebrating Masturbation Month, and it isn’t just that having a wank feels great or that you can put on your favourite porn and celebrate in style.

Let’s face it, how many of you will whack off before you go on a date, just to stop the nerves from getting the better of you? It turns out that jerking off is actually a great way to reduce stress, as it lowers the amount of cortisol in your body. Cortisol is the main stress hormone, and by lowering it you feel much more relaxed. So keep doing it, guys!

Masturbating might be good for you, but frequent masturbation is even better. For men, it helps to improve the quality of your sperm, as it will constantly be fresh, while women are much more likely to feel positive about their bodies after giving a little self-love.

We know that the favourite excuse for turning down sex of “I’ve got a headache” is a load of bullshit, as having sex is actually a great way to stop the pain. Well, it turns out that the same can be said of masturbation. By getting yourself to orgasm, the increased blood flow can help to reduce pain around the body, making you feel a hell of a lot better.

It is also a good way to kick-start your sex drive. The more you masturbate, the more you think about sex. No, it won’t turn you into a sexual deviant who seeks it all of the time, but it will mean that you are much more open to actually going for it. You might even be able to give that sexy woman a call to arrange a date with her as a result.

Will you be celebrating Masturbation Month in style, or are you going to just sit back and let it pass you by? Why not share your favourite video to inspire others to do what feels amazing, or even tell us your ultimate sex fantasy for jacking off to?
