Is Russian Siri Homophobic?

Anyone who has been paying attention to world news will know that things have been a bit difficult in Russia for the gay community. The government there really don’t seem to be fans of gays and lesbians. This has resulted in legislation banning the promotion of homosexuality. That will have obvious effects, as in children not being taught that being gay is normal, and perfectly natural. However, an unexpected repercussion occurred recently, with I-phone app ‘Siri’, seeming to make homophobic comments when asked certain questions relating to the gay community.

A Crazy Conversation

‘Alex’, had the following conversation with the app.

Alex: “Siri, gay clubs around me?

Siri: “I would have turned red (blushed) if I could.”

Alex: “How to register a gay marriage in the UK?”

Siri: [Silence]

Alex: “How to register a gay marriage in the UK?”

Siri: “I will pretend I haven’t heard it.”

Well, unsurprisingly, this caused a major kick off on social media. Most people thought that this was a case of Apple making sure that their apps were in conjunction with national laws.

“Apple is required to conform to the law of the land in order to sell devices in a place. Recognizing that is realism, not cynicism,” stated one Reddit user.

However, some of the comments in Russian were far less reasonable, with homophobia evident, and users questioning what it had to to with the West anyway?

Alex explains how this all came about.

“I was out with friends who’d updated their phones to the latest version of iOS,” he said. “Russian Siri was one of the new features available. So we made queries using the word ‘gay’ and got very weird replies. We also got similar responses with the word ‘lesbian'”

Apple have claimed that this was all a technical error and it has now been fixed. Hmmm, I am not so sure.

“I can understand if a company needs to adapt to the legislation of a country,” says Alex. “Apple fixed it. But there hasn’t been an explanation as to how it happened in the first place.”

Completely Torn

OK, I am not really that sure where I stand on this. Everyone knows what I think of anti-gay legislation. It is pretty much a disgrace in this day and age. However, any person or company who enters a country should always be living by the law of the land. It may have been different of the conversation went as follows.

Alex: “Siri, gay clubs around me?

Siri: That is pretty disgusting

Alex: “How to register a gay marriage in the UK?”

Siri: [Silence]

Alex: “How to register a gay marriage in the UK?”

Siri: Listen queer, go and seek help off Jesus.

Now that would have been pretty out of order (believe it or not).

To me, Siri seems non-committal there. However, once again, the Russian legislation is, by most reasonable peoples opinion, pretty out of order. Should the world be making it clear that it is unacceptable?

As I said, I am totally confused. What do you think? Let us know in the Escort forum, or in the comments section below.
