Free The Nipple!

Titties, boobs, knockers, they’re a work of art by the most high, and that’s probably why they’ve been featured in ancient and modern sculptures, art, and photography. Breasts and especially the nipple are a highly erogenous zone on a woman, and because of that a number of Western cultures associate boobs with sexuality regarding naked breasticus as taboo, immodest, indecent and even punishable by law.

Outlawing a woman’s twin peaks from being seen is some outdated, patriarchal jibber jabber. Breasts on women being criminalized when there’s no similar law applicable to dudes is sexist. Dudes have been able to rock bare chested for the whole of history, while women were instructed to cover their melons, and thus the titties were socially stigmatized. Unless a broad is on a wild beach, her boobs are supposed to be tucked away. But come on man, it’s the 21st century, and a woman’s boobs should not only be equal, they should be praised, exalted, celebrated and given the credit they most certainly deserve.

The breasts on a woman are more prominent than those on the Dude for a reason. Probably because those jugs of life provide nourishing sustenance. But besides feeding infants, female breasts carry social and sexual connotation more so than man titties. Perhaps because those jiggly wigglys figure into her sexual attractiveness and they are an erogenous zone. Women have been condition to accept the suppression of the nipple while laws perpetuate its oppression yet, we’re over it man!

Free The Nipple

An association fighting for gender equality called “Free the Nipple” is suing the city of Fort Collins in Colorado to be allowed to show their bare breasts. The group’s founder Brittany Hoagland and Samantha Six filed the 13 page lawsuit claiming the ordinance that bars women from exposing their breasts is sexist, violates their Constitutional rights, and it’s rooted in outdated puritanical values which discriminates against women.

Last year, Hoagland brought the ordinance to the attention of the Fort Collins City Council. She was attempting to change the language of the ordinance, so that both men and women would be free to show their cans in the city. Last October, the Council agreed to allow breastfeeding, and chose to clarify how the ordinance applied to children younger than 10 years old. Wow, breastfeeding is legal and children can be naked, it almost sounds ridiculous to imagine the opposite of what seems only natural.

The violation of the ordinance can be punished by a fine of up to $2,650, imprisonment of up to 180 days or both. Seriously, WTF, bare breasts on a woman, and you’re placing her in prison in the land of the free! In thirty of the United States, the court has recognized a woman’s right to appear topless in public, but a lot of other City Councils need to catch up with the times and stop perpetuating this sexist nipple suppression. Thankfully the only constant is change, so Free the Nipple enthusiasts hope the Fort Collins City Council will eventually rectify the ordinance, and catch the fuck up with the age of sense and sensibility.

Titty Reform

It’s going to be a long road, especially when you consider the evolution of the swimsuit for women, it’s no surprise. Back in the 18th century, swimsuits were called Bathing Gowns, and they were long dresses that were designed with weighted fabrics to not become transparent OR rise up while wading in the water. In the 19th century, women had to wear a one piece blouse and trouser ensemble. In 1909, Annete Kellerman was arrested in the United States for wearing a LOOSE one piece on the beach. A woman’s body has come a long way from being able to be show itself in its birthday suit, and although bikinis are commonplace now, the ideology that first made the Bathing Gown also probably wrote the ordinance that suppresses a woman’s titty to this day.

Lina Esco however said, Damn the Man when she started the Topfreedom campaign back in 2014. The campaign argues for the woman’s toplessness to be permissible in all areas that men and boys are allowed to be topless as well as opposing social media censorship. It aims to advance gender equality and to oppose sexual objectification. Currently women are still at risk for being charged with public indecency, disturbing the peace, and lewd behavior if she rocks her boobs loud and proud in the concrete jungle.

Director Lina Esco released her American feature film Free the Nipple through IFC Films. It portrays a group of young women who take to the streets of New York City as they protest the many legal and cultural taboos regarding female breasts by way of publicity stunts, graffiti installation, and First Amendment lawyers. She’s hoping to change the inequality of the woman’s boobs through film, social media, and a grassroots campaign all of which has gotten the support of celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Liv Tyler, and Lena Dunham. The movement has spread across the States, and even across the pond into Iceland, where the MP Björt Ólafsdottir posted a topless photo of herself, in solidarity with a teenage activist who received harassment for doing the same photo.

Freedom for women’s boobs!

Taboos still surround the female nipple and breast, showing that outdated, sexist, patriarchal, puritanical ideology still attempts to draw a fine line between dude titties and the woman’s boobs. Even on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, a woman’s areola is prohibited and marked as ‘graphic content’. Whether or not it’s tacky to post a picture of an Areola on Instagram is an opinion, just like the absurd idea that a female’s breasts are indecent and should be restricted is an opinion. It’s the bigoted opinion of the MAN, not the opinion of Mother Nature, nor the opinion of women, because times are a changing, and broads in the 21st century won’t stand for this suppression, man!

Curious to see the trailer for Esco’s comedic film documenting the real life journey of this titillating crusade? Then support the cause and check out Free The Nipple. Real talk, what really has to happen for female boobs to be as free as man titties is Dudes need to remember: If you love something, SET IT FREE! Dear Legislation, Stop trying to control body parts that aren’t yours. Sincerely, Free the Titty Committee.

And don’t forget, while boobs are meant to be celebrated, they are still the sole property of that woman, and unless she invites Dude for a more intimate viewing, airing those twin peaks doesn’t mean she’s declaring its range a public petting zoo. Respect women’s boobs like you would respect man titties, look because they made eye contact first, but know not all boobies are meant to be sexualized. Keep calm, be progressive and watch Playboy document the GoTopless Movement in FREE THE NIPPLE – FOR THE ALIENS.
